Windows 11 Announced

So we all thought that Windows 10 was going to be last version of Microsoft PC operating system…

That was until Microsoft announced recently that Windows 11 is coming.

In summary, what we know so far:

What is Windows 11?

Windows 11 is going to be the operating system that all new PCs will be built on.

So instead of your PC running on Windows 10, or Windows 7 (if you still haven’t upgraded your computer), Windows 11 will be the new operating system for all Windows based computers.

When is it coming?

Late 2021

What does it mean for me?

From a user perspective, Microsoft are spruiking a ‘rejuvenated start menu’ within a ‘calm and creative space’ to ‘maximise your productivity’.

So a lot of talk around how your computer will look and feel. Which will unnerve some users who are only now used to the Windows 10 layout.

Other improvements focus on gamers and the Microsoft Store integration including making Android apps available on Windows.

What is it going to cost me?

So long as your current PC meets the technical requirements set by Microsoft, you can upgrade your Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 free of charge. Microsoft will release a PC Health Check App to assist with this in the coming months.

Do I need to do anything now?

In short. No.

Windows 10 will remain supported by Microsoft until 14 October 2025, so you will still receive security patches bug fixes until this point if you would like to continue using your Windows 10 computer.

Windows 11 does not have a fixed release date. Late 2021 into 2022 has been mooted by Microsoft as a likely rollout commencement date.

As a general rule, Citcom recommends our business clients replace their computers on a 3-4 year cycle around the time the three year manufacturer hardware warranty lapses.  This is to ensure that degraded computer performance doesn’t impact your ability to work productively as well as reducing costs of replacing computer components, that could be covered under a manufacturer warranty.
